Lizzie Drums are individually crafted from Calabash gourds. Calabash gourds are also known as giant hard shelled gourds.
The gourds used in Lizzie Drums come from a variety of sources from Southern California. After cleaning both inside and out,
the gourds are lined on the inside with a coating of Fiberglass Resin. Selected gourds are reinforced with Fiberglass cloth
when required. The resin is added both to strengthen the gourds and to improve resonance. The heads on the drums can be hairy
goat skins, naked goat skins, or fish skins. The tuning of the drum is the traditional Mali Djembe weave. Drums headed with
the thicker hairy skins can be played with a soft, padded, mallet in addition to bare hands. Naked Goat and fish skinned drums
should only be played skin-on-skin with bare hands.

Shamanic drums are
designed to be played with either a soft mallet or with bare hands. The bodies
are chosen for exceptional density to handle the extra stress required to stretch the African Goat Skin heads. Leaving the hair on the skin produces a muted sound that adds
depth to the drum when used with either bare hands or padded mallet. All Shamanic
drums come with a suitable soft mallet.
