Journalism 218: Final Exam

 

Please answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper.   Type your answers.

DUE: May 22, 1 p.m.

 

1. In order of importance, list your top five, best written stories this semester. Give a brief explanation of why you chose each one. If you did not write five, explain why.

 

2. List at least five valuable or marketable skills you learned this semester.

 

3. List a minimum of five things you could have done better to facilitate the production of Harbor Tides and hctides.com this semester.

 

4. Evaluate your proficiency in the following areas. Give reasons for any shortcomings or exceptional performances. If you did none of these, refer to No. 3 above and ask if any or all of these things need to be considered there:

 

a)      copy editing

b)      Headline writing (coming up with ideas and using a computer to size and fit them)

c)      Formatting stories in InDesign

d)      Creating graphic headlines and/or graphics for pages

e)      Proofreading

f)        Story ideas. How many did you have this semester? How many came to fruition?

g)      Attendance, both classroom and lab

h)      Meeting deadlines. If you failed to turn in a story on time, why? If you were assigned a story and did not turn it in for whatever reason, why?

i)        Podcasting

j)        V-casting

k)      Recruiting new members to the staff

 

5. What do you feel are the keys to meeting copy and publication deadlines for you? For other staff members?   Did you show development in this area? Why or why not?

 

6. If you were in charge, how would you motivate staff to meet deadlines, attend class and be there on production and distribution days? Be specific. What exercises, charts, graphs, etc. would you use?

 

7. List at least five things you would do to improve the quality of the Harbor Tides and hctides.com next semester. (Answer this question whether or not you plan to return).

 

8. In what areas would you like special instruction or help next semester? (If you are not returning, explain why you are not returning and what you plan to do.)

 

9. How useful would assigned lab hours be? Do you agree with them? Why or Why not?

 

10. What are the best ways to recruit new students to participate on the staff?
