Places to camp
Hanging Rock State park.
This park makes a good day trip for Cub Scouts or a camping trip for Boy Scouts.
Many trails and waterfalls in the park to see and the view from hanging rock is great.
If the campground is full there are two others on the Dan River just outside the park.

Canoe trips are available on the Dan that last about half a day.
Uss Yorktown at Patriots point in Charleston SC has overnite camping for Cub and Boy Scouts.
Combine it with historic trails program or Aviation merit badge to keep the boys looking around.
Meals are included and you get a tour of Ft Sumter. I like to go in the very early spring to avoid the heat.
Stone Mtn SRA has a good group site.
No backpacking sites, but you can hike 10 miles using the trails.
Do not pass up the waterfalls at this park, they are worth seeing.
