Q. & A. What are the NOTARY requirements? A Notary public in California is appointed and commissioned by the Secretary of State with the authority to perform their official duties anywhere in the state.   The term of office, after completion of an initial qualifying examination, is for four (4) years and is subject to renewal every four (4) years. The candidate to become a Notary Public must be: State of California Resident  - 18 years of age – Fill out the Notary Public Application & Pass a background check Photo 2."X 2" Have satisfactorily completed a six (6) hour course (approved by the Secretary of State – Our courses comply with requirements and were approved by the Secretary of State) Pass a written examination giving by the Secretary of State. - For the State examination please have ready a completed commission application and two number two-pencils, and a $40.00 check or money order made payable to the Secretary of State ( if retaking the exam, the State requires a $20.00 check or money order)-We will make sure you are ready – We are with you “every step of the way” to success and provide PRACTICE TEST-So you can practice before taken the State Exam.  Q. & A. What can you tell me about the state examination? The California Notary Public Exam is comprised of 30 multiple choice questions which you have 50 minutes to complete. You must answer 21 questions correctly to pass (70%). You must take a check for $40 made payable to the Secretary of State a Proof of Completion provided by 1st California Notary Services  and a Notary Application also provided by 1st California Notary Services.
