GPS Mount for a Motorcycle
This device was made using the advice of Jack Hunt and Patrick Mullin, contributors to the SABMAG Mailing List.
Jack offered the idea of making a wood copy of the GPS unit and molding plastic around it.
Patrick sent pictures of a mount he fabricated in metal.

I used the following tools
Sawzall, electric jigsaw, heat gun, electric drill, and an Electric belt sander.
First I traced the outline of the GPS onto a piece of 2x4 and rough cut it out. I finished the shaping with the belt sander

Next I made a pattern, using a piece of cardboard.

I cut out a piece of acrylic plastic to to this shape. Then, using the wooden “GPS” pattern, I heated the plastic with the heat gun and bent it around the pattern. For stability, I ran a screw through the plastic into the wood pattern.
After I was done, I removed the pattern and reheated the plastic and bent it a bit further to increase the grip.
I then drilled holes for the wrist strap to feed through the plastic to use as a safety strap. I also drilled a hole for the auxillary power cord.

Here’s the mount with the GPS in position

I will fasten to the handlebars with a clamp and some strap steel. Pop rivets will fasten the plastic to the strap.
“Tomorrow, tomorrow, It is Tomorrow”
During the night, I had another idea (OUTCH!~!)
I used a bicycle bar end for a mount. It is a mountain bike part. I cut an inch or so off, drilled (twice, I might add!! My eyeball was out of calibration.) two holes and fastened the plastic mount to the bar end stub with screws and nuts. Here’s a picture of the empty mount.

And with the GPS in position
