A Visit to Toraņo

During my visit to Toraņos in Miami I had the opportunity to see the distribution center and talk to Charlie Toraņo, President of Toraņo Cigars, and my good friend Armando Lapido, a familiar face to those who have participated in the ABC Cigar Smokers (where Toraņo rules) The air was charged with excitement for the incoming RTDA show and the preparations it requires. While we talked about the new cigars and partaked of some of the old favorites, I was able to appreciate how much effort is involved in running an operation like this, and how much of a labor of love it involves. Everybody seemed happy and fully dedicated to make Toraņo the Numero Uno and on top of that, they get to smoke cigars in the office! Is that a dream job or what?

The Toraņo family was one of Cuba’s best-known tobacco growers until their lands were seized by the Castro government in 1960. The family’s work in Cuba began in 1916 when Santiago Toraņo emigrated from Spain and decided his future would be in tobacco.

Now the fourth generation of Toraņos is creating outstanding cigars, but in the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua. The Carlos Toraņo Noventa celebrates this 90-year journey with an all-Nicaraguan blend.

The tobaccos are all aged at least five years and are blended to offer a cigar of medium body, but with a balanced, exceptionally smooth flavor in three sizes: La Esperanza (6 x 52), Latin (6 1/2 x 54 torpedo) and, of course, Santiago (5 x 50). All sizes are expected to ship soon.
