Public Library Swing Initiative
The P.L.S.I. is one of our campaigns to help promote the availability of quality instructional and reference materials to the general public at no cost. We aim to achieve this by utilizing our public library system and making our tax dollars work for us. Public libraries purchase media as to make it readily available to the public for educational, self-enrichment, recreational, preservation, and research purposes. Swing Dancing is Americas folk dance. It is part of our history and culture. It spans virtually the entire twentieth century and flourishes to this day. It is done by all ages, to all types of music, in all demographic groups. From coast to coast in every major city you can find it. So why are there not resources for such a distinctive part of American culture at your library?
Take some time out one day and visit your local library check the catalog to see what resources are available to you for learning about Swing dancing. If you should find some quality materials there tell others in the area or post it on your local discussion board or even just tell people at a local dance about it. Chances are though you'll find a whole lot of nothing or some cheaply made instructional video from 1982 by Joe Nobody who took a few dance lessons and is now your virtual instructor to doom on the dance floor. You may find some How To Dance book that gives nearly impossible to decipher breakdowns of two or three moves written by a ballroom dance instructor who never socially dances.
So the library has nothing, well let's fix that! Go to your local library and visit the service desk. Tell them you'd like place a request for some instruction dance videos or a book on swing dance history. Please bring a list of videos and books you would like them to order and information on who they can order them from. Always include a few extra requests as they may not be able to acquire certain things so alternate requests are a good idea. Take note of the persons name that does the ordering and get their desks phone #. You should make a few follow up calls to insure the orders were placed and that you are notified when they arrive. Lastly, TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT! The old rule of supply and demand is every bit as true today so tell others to check them out. On a side note: make certain they label the videos (Swing Dancing/Balboa) or (Swing Dancing/West Coast) etc. as most people don't know the various styles that exist.
We started this in Pinellas County, FL in March of 2003 and already have ordered and received twenty-three instructional videos available now to the public.
The Videos we placed orders for and that are now available for check-out are:
