Several years ago, I purchased a used guitar that had come
with one dead pickup. I decided to dissect it to see if I could repair it. After constructing a simple winder,
I had it rewound and working. Everyone that heard the guitar commented how good that pickup sounded.
I then discovered and researched the basics about hand winding
pickups.
When pickup construction is automated, the thin magnetic wire
is wound around the bobbin very uniformly, similar to the appearance of a brand new spool of sewing thread. The
pickup then inherits a somewhat lifeless, sterile sounding property that one is unaware of until you A/B it with a properly
hand-wound pickup.
The hand-wound, non-uniform, wire layering technique known
as scatter-winding affects the musical characteristics of the pickup, submitting itself to a broader spectrum of frequencies
and harmonics.
