Pouring Rain, Grazing Elk, a steaming van, and lots of red ribbons. My memories of the Coquille quiz will be mostly from our ride home as I coaxed my uncooperative van Congratulations
to each of you who endured a grueling 5 hour van trip to have a great day of quizzing. HNC quizzers are awesome. I thought
all of you did very well.

Moving.....Hi Everyone,
A dry desert welcome from Hermiston,OR. I am here getting Jonathan
settled into his "bachelor" apartment. He starts his new job as a database analyst at the Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot
tomorrow morning. The plan, as of this moment, is that I will stay in Hillsboro until June when Steven graduates
from high school. Until then, I might be living part of the time in Hillsboro and part of the time in Hermiston. Please
pray for our family during this time of transition.
What this means for quizzing is that we need to all be praying that
God provides a new quiz coach for next year. Pray that whomever this person is, that they are sensitive to God's Holy Spirit
working in their heart.
Thanks for eleven wonderful years.

Sunday Evening Practice Time ChangeHey Quizzers,
Just a reminder that we will now be quizzing from 5:00-7:00pm on Sunday nights. I know that not all of you will
be able to come the whole time because of homework, etc, but please come when you can.

Awesome Shirts!!!Hi Quizzers,
A BIG!!! Thank you to Kris Gault who MADE all of our shirts this year. They look great. We had lots and lots of compliments
on them while we were at quiz camp last week in Bend. If for some reason you do not have your shirt yet, talk to me because
that means I have your shirt. Kris will let us know how much they cost after she adds up the cost of all of her supplies.
Thanks also to all of you who made the time to come to Bend with us for quiz camp this last weekend. I hope that you
all had as much fun as I did. I'm sorry that some of you could not miss school to come. Although we are traveling to the next
three quizzes you should not have to miss any school.
Please keep studying. I have a pile of candy bars and a bunch of coffee mugs that I would like for you to earn and therefore
remove from my sight- especially those candy bars.

Quiz CampHey Quizzers,
Make sure you have told me whether or not you are able to come to quiz camp in
Bend with us this next week. I'm still trying to track down a couple of you. I think you know who you are.
I know that many of us have not been able to get much studying done. Please, please, please
come to quiz camp to have fun, meet new people and learn more about quizzing. It doesn't really matter whether or not you
are in first place at quiz camp. It DOES matter who is in first place in March.
That said, as much as I must confess I like to win, the goal of teen quizzing is
not total anihilation of the other teams, but learning scripture and applying it in order to become more like Christ. That
means good sportsmanship is more important than winning. It means never making another team feel badly because they had a
bad round. It means always lifting others up and never tearing them down. We're all human, and sometimes our emotions do get
the best of us and we need to ask others for forgiveness.
One of the saddest things to see is a Bible quiz team that is cheating or has teammembers
that are fighting amongst themselves, or talking badly about other teams. It's sad because obviously they've missed the meaning
of the verses they are learning.
Let's make sure we are a good example to the other teams this quiz year.

No Practice Wednesday, September 9thHi Everyone,
Pastor Chris sent me an e-mail yesterday that he was cancelling youthgroup Wednesday night which means there will be
no quiz practice.
Please, Please, Please, just because we're not meeting and studying together does not mean that you can't spend a few
minutes Wednesday evening reading through your scripture portion, doing your homework, memorizing verses or writing questions.
Next Wednesday night we will be reviewing chapters 1-4 and it would be nice if everyone who comes to practice will have at
least read through all four chapters once or twice.
Don't get discouraged if you haven't started studying yet. The first four chapters of 1 Corinthians are about the same
size as the first chapter of Luke. In one week you should be able to memorize all of the required verses and be
able to answer a lot of questions from the material. Don't give up!
Thanks to all of you for coming to my site at family camp for hot chocolate and a quick rain shortened devotional. ("I
gave you milk, not solid food....) I'll have to bring you the "gold", "silver" and "costly stones" that we put through the
fire. You can barely tell anything happened to them. The wood hay and straw were completely gone- nothing but fine gray ash.
Let's strive for things that have eternal value, things that will last through fire. A special thanks goes out to JP
who had some great applications as to what kinds of things are gold in our lives and what things are straw.

Sunday Evening Quiz PracticesIt's official. Sunday practices will be from 6:00-7:00pm on Sunday nights. Now many of you might not remember that that
is the time quiz practices used to be- back in the dark ages when Ryan Donley was still in high school. I'm hoping that this
time slot will work for the majority of teens who are wanting to quiz this year.
Wednesday night practices will start September 2nd and will be from 6:00-6:45 every Wednesday night that there is youthgroup.
If for some reason you want to quiz, but you are busy both Sunday and Wednesday nights come talk to me. You are welcome
to learn the material on your own and still come to the quizzes, but I will warn you of this: know that it is very difficult
to remain motivated without the encouragement of others. And if you are that motivated, the rest of the teens on your team
will suffer because you're not at practice every week shaming them into studying.
(BTW the only teen I have ever coached that was THAT motivated was Jon-Mark who spent at least 30 minutes every day memorizing.
He can still quote 1st and 2nd Corinthians.)

Thoughts on a New Quiz YearThis will be my 11th year as a teen quizzing coach at HNC. That means that my new seventh graders were in the toddler
class when I first started. People age, kids grow up, but God's word stays the same. It's just as important in guiding lives
now as it was eleven years ago or eleven hundred years ago for that matter.
I'm thinking that this year we are going to try quizzing on Sunday evenings at the same time as the children's quizzers
which will be from 6:00-7:00 pm during the evening service. I can't make it official though, until Pastor Chris gets
back from Senior high camp and I have a chance to talk with him about it. It will help a couple of families who have kids
and teens in quizzing. It will be good and bad for me- good because I won't have to get up quite so early on Sunday mornings
and bad because now I will spend my Sunday afternoons thinking about quizzing instead of napping. On Wednesday nights
we will continue to practice before youthgroup from 6:00-6:45pm.
I've fallen behind in my memorization goals. It seems as though life has gotten in the way. That happens sometimes. Instead
of quitting though, I'm going to pick myself up and after some reviewing and rememorizing I'm going to start in where I left
off at the end of 1 Corinthians chapter 6. If you've fallen behind. Please don't get discouraged. Make some new goals
for yourself and then get started on them right away. Ask me if I've finished chapter 6 and I'll give you a prize. Accountability
is good for adults as well as teens.

Just a Little Bit Each DayI've been learning five verses a day. It takes me about 15 minutes at the beginning of each day and then I spend another
15 minutes at lunch reviewing what I've learned. That's not really all that much time. It's easier when you are memorizing
a whole chapter than when you are memorizing separate scripture verses because in a chapter the words flow together better.
Today I'm going to try and finish chapter three. I'll give a piece of candy to anyone who asks me at church tomorrow whether
I've finished memorizing chapter 3.
This week why don't you set a memorization goal for yourself and go for it? Maybe you want to memorize just one verse
a week. By the end of the summer you will know at least 6 verses that you didn't know before. Whatever your goal, don't put
it off any longer. Get a friend and memorize together. Keep each other accountable. Come to memory club on Wednesday
nights and we'll be happy to listen to what you have learned. Memorize at least a verse or two. I know you can do
it.

Summer Memory ClubHi Everyone,
As some of you may know, Darren and Lisa broke up and are not getting married this summer. Wait, I can read your minds,
"What," you are asking yourselves, "does personal Redshaw family gossip have to do with HNC quizzing?" Well, it has to do
with quizzing because suddenly I have the time, energy, and money that I was going to be spending on the wedding to spend
on other things.
And so, I have felt led after the month of midnight prayer to start a memory club at the church on Wednedsay nights
before youth group. It's not quizzing, though I'm afraid that if I'm leading something that involves teenagers and Bible memory
people are going to call it quizzing. Bible Memory Club is my chance to do all the fun crazy Bible memory games that I practice
on my Bible Study Fellowship students during the school year, but that I never have time to do during quiz practice because
we have to be serious and learn questions and jump on the jumpseats. In Bible memory club we are going to play tag, run relays,
throw water balloons, eat pizza, make human pyramids - and in the process hide some pieces of God's word in our hearts for
those times when we really need it.
My favorite story is from when I was childrens' director in Omaha Nebraska. A three year old and his mom were stranded
when their car died and they couldn't find a ride. Supposedly the toddler said "It's okay mom, and started singing Joshua
1:9- "Have I not commanded you be strong and courageous, do not be terrified, do not be discouraged for the Lord your God
will be with you whereever you may go." It was a song the child had learned at church.
Come join us and find out how fun learning the Bible can be. I'm committing myself to memorizing the book of 1 Corinthians
this summer. I'm almost through chapter 2. Hey, if I can do it anyone can. We all need to hide God's word in our hearts so
that "When", (not if) the day of evil comes you may be able to stand your ground." (from Eph 6:13)

Myrtle CreekI need to know who is able to go to Myrtle Creek so I can register teams and secure housing. At this late date we will
probably be sleeping in the church, but I want Myrtle Creek to know how many to plan for as soon as possible.
Thanks so much for everyone who has stepped up and helped with practices so I could be with Grandma. She's been
doing better and right now I am planning on going to Myrtle Creek with the team.

Hillsboro is Hosting the Wa/Pac QuizIt's official. Hillcrest Church of the Nazarene is unable to host the quiz this year and so the quiz, on February 6th
and 7th will be held at our church. The reality of what I have just agreed to do is just now hitting me and I am trying
not to panic. But no, instead of panicking, I am going to revel in the thought of not having to drive through rush hour traffic
to Hillcrest this year. I will need a lot of help from all of my quizzers, and from the church family. We will need help housing
some of the quizzers and officials from Oregon and we will need people to come and help us haul tables. Thanks in advance.
I know I can count on all of you.
And of course, please remember to keep studying.

Wow! I'm still in shock that we went to a quiz and all six of our quizzers came home with top quizzer trophies.
Now part of that may have been that our second team was in a lower division, but I'm still proud of all of you. Way to go.
Now that you have all tasted victory, let's use this momentum to keep studying. Every little bit helps.
Just five or ten minutes a day could make a huge difference in how well you do at the Wa/pac quiz.
Since all of you did so well I owe each of you a 2 liter of soda. Please make sure you tell me what kind you would
like. We're still waiting to hear back fromt he Wa/pac leaders as to whether or not the location of the Wa/pac quiz will need
to be changed. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.
Keep studying!!!

My Vacation is slipping awayI had so many things I was going to get done over Christmas break. I was going to get ahead with the quizzing homework.
I was going to work on the bulletin board and I was going to memorize Luke chapter 14. I have managed to barely break even
with our homework and I've memorized the first few verses of Luke 14. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with that
bulletin board.
Sometimes life gets in the way of our best intentions. I could just give up, but no, I am still determined to do what
I can. I am going to keep memorizing Luke 14 and I'm going to do my best to carve some time out this week to work on writing
quiz questions.
If you find that you are a bit behind on your goals, do what I'm doing. Dust yourself off, dig in, and do what you can.
You may not be able to do all of the things that you had wanted to do at first, but you can still do some of them, and something
is better than nothing.

Snow DaysI know that many of you have been out of school this week because of the snow. This would be a great time to catch up
on your quizzing. Let's see if as a team we can memorize all four chapters of the new material. Keep checking the website
as I will update it as soon as I know if practice is cancelled because of the weather. Remember, if church or youth group
is cancelled we will cancel quiz practice.
I'm still trying to decide a good date for a vacation quiz practice. I'll let you know by e-mail what I decide.

Thanks for the Great AttitudesI just want to thank all of you quizzers for your great attitudes during the Coquille Quiz. It was a long van ride both
directions and you were all wonderful. The couple who hosted the guys said again and again what nice kids you were. Bob House
at Bob's Market in Scottsburg also commented on what nice kids you all were. I know that many of you did not do as well at
the quiz as you would have liked, but you kept good attitudes anyway. You were awesome!
I owe all of you milkshakes. I'm planning a practice during Christmas Break. Hopefully I can find a time for it that
the majority of you will be able to attend and we can get the milkshakes then. Also, I owe the entire pro team and Charis
2 liters of pop from this quiz. I need to look at the past scoresheets to see who I owe 2 liters from November.
I noticed that if you memorize just one verse a day for the next month you will have memorized an entire chapter of the
new material. Four verses a day and you will be able to memorize all the new material. If each member on each team chooses
a different chapter to memorize as a team you will have memorized all the new material over the next month with only one verse
a day. You can do this!!!

Are You Going to Coquille?Hi Everyone,
I sent out e-mails with the information about the Coquille quiz to everyone, but if you somehow didn't get the e-mail,
most of the information is on the information page of this website. Call me if you have questions. I need to know as soon
as possible whether or not you can come. The Coquille church needs to know how many people will be needing housing.
Also, just a reminder, there will be no Wednesday night practice November 26th because there is no youth group meeting
that night.

I thought you all did great!Okay, I'll be the first to admit that it is a lot harder to keep a good attitude when you are losing, than when you are
winning, but even so, I saw some great attitudes on Saturday even though the win/loss ratios were not as nice as we would
have liked. Everyone jumped on questions and got them right. The pro team got their fourth person bonus and the intermediate
team their third person bonus. Way to go!! Keep studying. Many of the losses for both teams were by only one or two
questions. Check out the link on the results page for the full results from the Eugene Quiz.
I forgot my camera, so I don't have any pictures from this quiz. I'll try and get a new "van" picture when we travel
to Coquille in December.

The November Quiz- Registration and MemoryIt's time for me to register for the November 8th Quiz at Eugene 1st. I will need to hear from all of you no later than
Sunday, November 2nd. You need to count all of the questions you have written on chapters 4-8 of Luke
and let me know the number. You will also need to arrange a time to quote your memory to me before the quiz.
I am willing to listen to memory in the van on the way to the quiz, but we all know that, (quoting in the van) is difficult,
and I may not be able to listen to all 9 quizzers memory during a 2 hour van ride. OKAY I'D BETTER NOT BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO
ALL 9 QUIZZERS MEMORY DURING A TWO HOUR VAN RIDE SO START STUDYING.

Saturday I was disappointed that the WBQA quiz was cancelled Saturday, but I had a great time at the impromtu Beaverton vs
Hillsboro practice. It was fun to have a chance to get to know other quizzers and coaches in our area. Thank you Beaverton
for inviting us.
