FAQ's

Do I need a license to fish on your boat?

Yes, you do need a license, and you need some sort of ID to satisfy DFG rules that you are indeed the person that is supposed to be fishing with that license.

Where do I get a license?

Just to the left of the center of the page should be the link for licenses.  You can obtain a one day or other license as you see fit.

Although we may be fishing near where a tackle shop is, please note, many tackle shops are not carrying fishing licenses now because they can be purchased online now.

How many people do you take?

The boat is capable of carrying a significant load due to it's construction and rating.  However, a comfortable boat is two adults or one adult and two children.  It is a 17' boat, so space is limited.

What time do you go out?

We can leave the dock most anytime it is safe due to lighting conditions in the early morning.  However, CA Department of Fish and Game (DFG) states in the fishing regs that we can only fish one half hour before sunrise.  Please consult tide books for the "official" time of sunrise, as it changes everyday.

Realize that you have chartered my boat, so you can tell me what time you want me to meet you to start.

come back?

I need to be back at the dock by about 2 or 3pm, depending on the trip and arrangements of course, in order to have time to prepare for the next day of fishing.

Again, your charter, if you want to return earlier, that's fine.

Where do we go?

The boat is on a trailer, as long as there is access that I can get to the water with the trailer, we can take it most anywhere.

Generally we fish the local ocean, bays, rivers, and lakes.

I can customize a trip to go most anywhere you like.  For instance, perhaps you would like to fish Fort Bragg for one day, and take a river trip to see old growth redwoods and the remnants of California's early logging days on the next day.  We can do that, and more.

What do we fish for?

We have a remarkable choice of species in the area.  Sturgeon, sharks, skates, stripers, rock fish, ling cod, salmon, crab, large and small mouth bass, halibut, sand dabs, and many others.  Of course, DFG rules rule.

Where do we meet you?

We meet at an agreed upon location based on what YOU want to do.  There are lots of options here!

How much is the trip?

Geneally I charge $250 per day for the boat, tackle, bait, and my services as a professional licensed captain and fishing guide.

What do I need to bring?

Water (or drinks), lunch, your fishing license, a official ID card (driver's license or any ID that is honored by DFG) and layered clothing.

On the clothing note, I want to make sure you know this:

Cotton Kills!

What that means is that cotton is a really bad insulator of wet weather.  Even though it isn't raining, being on the water can and usually does drop the temperature, and the moisture works it's way into the fibers of your clothes.  Cotton absorbs this moisture very well, and wicks it to the atmosphere, which makes for a great cooler.  That's why years ago the army used to put water in canvas bags in front of the radiators, the water would seep out, evaporate, and keep the water cool, and help cool the jeep as well.  It will do the same to your body.

Wear layers of synthetics or wool.  Acrylics, plush, etc. are all good to use.  Top it off with a water proof or water resistant wind breaker.

Avoid cotton sweatshirts and outer layers.  Wear head cover, most of your body heat is lost through your head, which has no insulation and recieves lots of blood.  And of course, wear some warm shoes and socks.
