After reading chapter one and reviewing the lecture for chapter one, print
out the chart found below. Over the next week, you will keep close track of your media consumption. (Please scan
or e-mail your completed log back to me with your responses to the questions below.)
At the end of your week, analyze the results and answer the following questions:
1. Estimate the percentage of total time you were exposed to advertisments.
2. Focus on the medium with which you spend the most time. Describe
the reasons you choose to engage with it. Is it for enjoyment, companionship, surveillance, or interpretation?
A combination? Explain your answer.
3. Could you do without your favorite medium for a week? Why
or why not? How would your life change without it?
(REMEMBER TO COMPLETE OR PASTE YOUR FINAL RESPONSES AND CHART IN THE ETUDES ASSIGNMENT
SHELL.)
CHART:
Understanding mass media
begins with examining the role it plays in your own life. Record the time you
spend over the next week with each medium. Complete the chart at the end of each
day so you don’t leave out any time spent. Be as accurate as possible (and
watch “estimations”—we tend to under- or over-estimate things J.)
