Some book publishers, in order to promote sales, have been actively engaging in the practice of publicizing books written by physically attractive authors hoping that the author's photo on the cover (and subsequent public appearances) will induce sales.  The Washington Post highlighted this in a July 2, 2001 article.

1.  Is the anonymity of an author important?

2.  What effects can you see this practice having on the book industry?

3.  Have you ever bought or read a book solely based on your interest in an author?  Who was the author and what was your interest?

4.  Do you think physical attractiveness is an ethical consideration by which to sign or not sign an author?  Why or why not?

5.  Visit a bookstore and check out some fiction bestsellers.  How is the author depicted?  Is there a  photo, and how is the author described?

Remember to copy and paste your responses in the etudes assignment box for chapter 8.
