Asylum (and withholding of removal)
Provides relief and ultimately adjustment of status for individuals seeking
refuge from past persecution or who have a well-founded fear of future persecution on account of race, religion, political
opinion, membership in a social group, or national origin. Note that a grant
of withholding of removal does not permit adjustment of status.

Temporary Protected Status
(TPS)
Enables individuals from designated countries to obtain a temporary immigration
status in the US.
NACARA
Enables individuals from Nicaragua,
Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala and the former Soviet bloc countries to obtain immigration status in the US.
VAWA Self-Petitions
Enables out-of-status immigrants married to US citizens or lawful permanent
residents who have been subjected to domestic violence and meet certain other criteria to obtain deferred action and eventual
permanent residence without the usually-required sponsorship of their abusive spouse
Trafficking Victims Protection Act
Offers protection to victims of ‘severe forms of trafficking’,
such as commercial sex or labor performed through force, fraud or coercion. “U”
visa interim relief offers protection to victims who are witnesses of specific crimes, including rape, sexual assault and
domestic violence.
Cancellation of Removal - For persons in removal (deportation) proceedings
Enables those in removal (deportation) proceedings to request that such
proceedings be terminated and adjustment of status be granted where certain criteria are satisfied concerning a person’s:
the length of residence in the US; criminal
background and good moral character; and proof of extreme and unusual hardship to a US Citizen/LPR spouse, parent or child.
Waivers
Relief available to overcome inadmissibility or excludability provisions
that may otherwise hinder obtaining lawful status in the US.
