We are
all on a spiritual journey as we travel through life. Often we think of that
spiritual journey as an inward one – which is only partially correct. It’s
also the outward journey that we take into the world. Have you ever walked
a labyrinth? ![]() The path into the labyrinth takes us deeper into the center and then we walk back out on
the same path. It’s often suggested that you enter the labyrinth with a
question on your heart to which you’re searching for an answer. In the
center, you stay still, focused on God or Spirit, to hear an answer. On the way
out of the labyrinth is a time to take in that answer and to begin the process of seeing where the answer will take you.
Similarly, our spiritual journey also goes back outward. In my work as a spiritual director, both with individuals and in small groups, it is important to me that as we understand ourselves better that we then take that understanding out into the world. Our inner journey often brings us increased peace and serenity as well as self-understanding. I believe that God then calls us to work towards more peace in our world. Usually the first part of the journey is the inward one. If we are hurting, having difficulty forgiving someone, struggling with questions about ourselves, we need first to take that inward journey. We need first to take care of ourselves and understand ourselves. There will come a time when we know we are ready for taking outward steps. The journey is also like a spiral – we journey inward and come to some peace and go outward again. Then something else occurs in our lives and the inward journey is needed. We are constantly moving in and out. Spiritual direction is an opportunity to work with an individual to help you on that journey. I liken spiritual direction to someone holding a mirror up for you so that you can more clearly see what’s happening in your life.
