Welcome!

What's it like sailing a Zephyr?  Here is a video clip that I shot with my digital camera while sailing on Lake Washington near Seattle in about 20 knots of wind.

Sep 9, 2007 Launched at Mukilteo, WA, sailed NE to Everett. Circumnavigated Jetty Island and back to Mukilteo - a distance of nearly 15 miles.  Winds were perfect at 10-15 knots. Watched dozens of kite surfers at Jetty Is. Got a little wet at the South end of Jetty Is, where it's always choppy. Had to row the last bit to Mukilteo when the wind died.  This was my longest and most challenging voyage thus far.

Sep 15, 2007 Rowed from Fox Island to McNeil Island and back (near Tacoma, WA), a round trip distance of 4.2 miles with our TSCA-Puget Sound group. I would have prefered to sail, but alas there was no wind whatsoever.  Saw dozens of seals.  I need better oars.

In the summer of 2006 I built my first wooden sailboat; a "Zephyr" designed by Sam Devlin in Olympia, WA.  The Zephyr is Devlin's adaptation of the classic Melonseed skiff, built from plywood using the popular stitch-and-glue construction technique. This site was created to document my experience of building this boat, and hopefully to assist current and future builders of this delightful sailing skiff.
