Online Information Design

One of ten pages from Craig Marion's Software Design Smorgasbord. The others are:

Performance Support Knowledge Support Productive Workplaces Knowledge Management Home

Online Information Design focuses on how information is presented within software and on the web. It's a multidimensional area, since rhetoric (the quality of writing), graphics and visualization, and technology (tools for building online help and online courses, as well as the capabilities of the platforms that display software and information) all bear on it. So do hard-to-classify themes such as building task structure into interfaces and applying minimalist principles to integrated user assistance.

One aspect of information design I've been focusing on for a few years now that -- for reasons that elude me -- hasn't received wider recognition is the presentation of information interactively. In May of 2000 I created a map of the techniques I was aware of:

The Information Designer's Palette of Interactive Assistance

I describe these techniques in my article Make Way for Interactive Assistance.

Additional information on presenting information at time of need is available on the Performance Support page, and information on organizing information and managing its content is treated on the Knowledge Management page. Additional information on interactivity is available on the Multimedia and Human-Computer Interaction pages.
