LBCC

Some Information about the Long Beach Convention Center
that you won't find anywhere else nor will you care unless you plan on producing a Tradeshow or Convention at this facility
This Convention Center is very easy to work at. There are a lot of facilities that not only think that their building is made of golden egg shells but they also believe that they can completely renovate the whole building while having the contractors pay for it because of a little damage to the building. Well, I can tell you that LBCC is not like that at all. They know that we are expected to work in the facility, so they don't get in our way or become overly protective. Of course, we could screw things up by someone causing some damage to a high profile area and then trying to cover it up. The worst thing that you can do in a situation like this is to attempt to play it off like the contractor is not at fault for the damages.  Right now, the center allows us to drive forklifts and electric carts in the un-carpeted old lobby between Hall C and the Arena. We can drive inside of the Arena and the perimeters. They even allow us to use pallet jacks and dollies in the new Carpeted lobby. They make it easy to work there. As long as we are careful and respect the facility.

When working in the A or B halls, the dock foreman will have access to a lockable dock office which is located on the dock.  It is very convenient especially if your show is going to be there for a week or so or if you have back to back shows. You can lock up your walkie-talkies and other equipment. The center will not give you the keys to this office. You lock it when you leave and you tell them what time you would like it open in the morning and it will be opened.

The house security is done by a company called Staff Pro. They are a nation wide security contractor. They have a contract with the whole Long Beach Convention Center. They do all shows. The only problem that I have ever had with them is the fact that some of the guards seem to be a little too gung ho. As if a few of them came up just a few points shy on the psych exam and didn't make it onto a real Police Force.

The center has recently changed their policies on inside empty storage. No more crates allowed to be staged inside any hall while shows are going on. They will alow you to leave fiber cases but no cardboard.

The center has their own on-site electricians but they do not work the shows. Every show will have to have an outside electrical contractor. A company called TSE (Trade Show Electrical) or Edlin Electrical is almost always present at the center.

*UPDATE
There is no longer any free parking at the site. Everyone must pay the current $8 parking fee. It's then up to you to negotiate with your employer to get reimbursed. We get our parking reimbursed because it was negotiated into our Union Contract.

Just across the street from the front of the Long Beach Convention Center along Pine Ave is now the newly rehashed and freshly built "Pike". The old Pike was an area with broken down rides, carnival rip-off games, and tattoo parlors. The "New Pike" looks very much like a Shopping Mall. It has food outlets and other entertainment.
