Did you know that you get to choose how happy or how unhappy you are? You can focus on what makes you miserable or what
makes you happy, and you can focus on what other people do "to" you to make you happy or unhappy, or you can focus on feeling
what you want to feel.
Do you tell yourself you won't be happy until.... whatever
until
I lose weight
until
I find my perfect mate
until
I find the right job
until
I make "this" amount of money
until
I finish (school, or training, or this current project)
until
I have children
until
the children are grown
until I'm married
until I'm divorced
well, you get the picture. Abraham Lincoln said "Most people are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
Ok, ok, I know there are external circumstances that make it pretty hard to be happy. Severe illness in you or a loved
one. A really miserable SOB for a boss. Hurricanes destroying entire cities. Yes, I get that. Still, making the best of what's
going on in your life produces better results than sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. And, yes, I DO know that
sometimes we need to cry it out. Or to sort it out. But most of us who aren't in situations that are THAT dire act as if we ARE
in the world's worst situations.
