Connections to Reading Specialist Standards
Below is a list of Reading specialist competencies that have been met through this research project and elaboration on how
the project links to the standards.
Competency 007 (Vocabulary Development) The reading specialist understands and applies knowledge of vocabulary development
and instructional methods that promote students' oral and written vocabulary knowledge at the levels of early childhood through
grade 12.
Through my research I discovered instructional methods to promote students’ written vocabulary through better spelling.
When students are not hung up on spelling, their vocabulary will increase. They won’t be afraid to use words because
they’re uncertain of the spelling.
Competency 008 (Written Language) The reading specialist understands and applies knowledge of written language and instructional
methods to reinforce reading and writing at the levels of early childhood through grade 12.
Through my research of spelling I discovered theories about our written language that related to how words are formed and
how the spelling developed. This knowledge is applied through instructional strategies to reinforce reading and writing of
students.
Competency 010 (Instructional Methods and Resources) The reading specialist understands and applies knowledge of methods and
resources for providing effective literacy instruction that addresses the varied learning needs of all students at the levels
of early childhood through grade 12.
My research led to the discovery of various techniques that can be used with different types of students with spelling problems.
I gave examples of different problem spellers—their characteristics and how best to assist the problems.
Competency 013 (Theoretical Foundations and Research-Based Curriculum)
The reading specialist understands and applies knowledge of the theoretical foundations of literacy and of research-based
reading/literacy curriculum.
I used many different sources in my investigation of spelling including different theories of how spelling should be taught.
I read several articles that related to research studies on how students learn to spell and how this applied to the curriculum.
