Reviews/Comments
Here are some comments that people have made on my music. Some of the comments are from reviews, some are from mail I have received, and some I just found searching around the net!
From the August '08 issue of Film Score Monthly:
Review of my H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds Score:
3 1/2 stars (out of 4)
The opening "March of the Martians" features an excellent syncopated
rhythmic drive and strong thematic writing. Hall is capable of writing
memorable, lyric themes, and his love theme in particular is gorgeous. Some of
the score's more horrific moments feature effective aleatoric clusters, and in
"The Martians Come Out" Hall briefly throws in the effect of a large wordless
chorus. In all, this is a diverse and rewarding listen.
Other comments on my musical
score to H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds:
- "I hope [Pendragon Pictures] plans to release Jamie Hall's musical score as a soundtrack album. It is a wonderful symphonic suite that deserves to be heard again and again. I'll be looking for it." -- Jeff Skinner
- "The other plus is the film's music. Jamie Hall produced a terrific score to the film. The music perfectly fits the scenes it is used in and whenever in appears it boosts the film considerably. If the score is ever released on CD, I'll be among the first to buy it." -- Amazon.com review by Matt Krenzel
- "I do want to say though the music by Jamie Hall is amazing. In the opening sequence, the orchestra comes in and creates a slow rythm which is right away the redeeming part of the whole movie. I watch the opening credits just for the music." -- Amazon.com review
- "The film also features a stellar orchestral score by film composer Jamie Hall. The music captures the terror, drama, and excitement of the film's story." -- posting on JournalOfHistory.com
- "This movie has excellent music by Jamie Hall. It was the best score I have heard in a long time. It is as much a musical epic as it is a classic epic." -- Eric Ortuzar
- "The music was also wonderful. The style and emotion of the music [was] absolutely perfect." -- Steven J. Bello
- "The music blends nicely with the style, which in itself is a tribute to musical scores that were once fuller and allowed to support the film. The Martian theme is done with heavy brass and the humans theme is done with strings. The writer's theme is light at first then slowly transists to a darker more serious mood. The artilleryman has a drum theme and human deaths are scored with an operatic scope." -- Brian B.
- "I loved the intertwining of the story and the music and the powerful feelings of hope and despair." -- Jeffrey Causey
