Okay, so I'm kind of glad I have this fun blog to maintain during my
trip planning. While I was researching the things in Edinburg that I want to add to my "must see" list, I
learned about some new terms.
For example, I added Arthur's Seat to my list of must see's and in the
directions to get up to Arthur's Seat it said to climb up from the east where a grassy slope rises above Dunsapie Loch. So I had to look up Loch which I found out means a body of water
(similar to a lake) in Scotland. I didn't know that!
This discovery made me realize that although I'm going to be in Scotland
where they speak English I really can't assume that I'll understand all the terms they may use in conversation.
So I did a little investigation and found this website of commonly used
terms in Edinburgh HERE.
And just for the heck of it, here are some interesting examples:
broat - brought
cos - because (this sounds similar to our slang
"cuz")
mob - undercover police (I thought what Irony)
oot - out
fur - for
Lavvy - Water Closet (I really should remember
this one! LOL!)
wee - small (okay this one I kind of knew)
boozer - Pub or in reference to a person,
someone who drinks often. This is a term we have in common :)
crappin - Scared, crap means shit, so to be crappin oneself is to be shit scared of something
(This made me LOL!)
And so there you have it! Although I will be traveling to an English
speaking country for the first time since 2005, I should still learn some common terms used in Scotland.
After all, I don't want to be "crappin" if I get myself accidently locked
in a Lavvy! Ha ha!
