One of my favorite
hobbies is Amateur Radio. I received a shortwave receiver as a Christmas gift when I was 12 years old. I strung up a
long wire antenna in the attic and once I started listening to Radio Netherlands I was hooked. During
the mid-1970s CB was very popular. My friends and I all had CB radios in our cars and I quickly learned that two
way radio was even more fun. Then life got in the way, but in 1993 I passed the 5wpm Morse code test & Novice and
Technician written exams and obtained my technician class license. By 1994 I had passed the 20wpm Morse code test
and General, Advanced and Extra Exams and was licensed AB6UI. I was the president of the Hughes Aircraft Company
Amateur Radio Club (HAC ARC) and am currently the station manager/trustee of W6HA. On UHF, in the Los Angeles area, I can be heard on the W6HA 70cm repeater 445.620- (pl 127.3). I also
enjoy the HF bands. During the day listen for me on 20M on the digital mode PSK-31. I also enjoy working SSB on
10M, 15M & 20M when there is Good DX and also enjoy a little CW QRP in the evening.
In 1994 I led
the St. Bernard High School SAREX contact team. This team was made up of members from the HAC ARC and TRW ARC. We had a horizon
to horizon contact with the Space Shuttle Endeavor STS-59. If you would like to hear a short Audio Clip from that contact
