You will find some of my reconstruction notes along the way in my Diary sections.
During the time between August 2005 and March 2006, I had saline injections put into my expanders to stretch my skin to the
size we wanted for my reconstruction. I believe I finally reached 770 cc's. I couldn't stand anymore. I had enough. It
is not that it was painful, it just started getting uncomfortable. Below are some pictures that were taken during the
reconstruction phase. An expander is inserted at the time of my masectomy surgery. After about a month after surgery,
I had my first blow up of about 25 cc's on each side. This stretches the skin. It really doesn't hurt, just feels
a little strange for a couple of days. After the final blow up, I have to wait about three months for the skin to stretch
before the implants can be inserted. My implant surgery was in March, 2006. The only problem was they were so
high up, it was hard trying to look normal in clothes. You can see by the pictures below as I started growing.
I absolutely love my plastic surgeon. Her name is Dr. Mariah Moffitt and she is the best. She always made me feel
good about myself and told me how great I was going to look. I couldn't have picked a better doctor.
04/27/06: Von saw both her plastic surgeon and
her oncologist this week and everything is great!
The healing process is moving along and
we are relieved and grateful.
04/19: Von had a productive visit with the infection
specialist yesterday. Since she has progressed so well,
iv antibiotics are no longer necessary,
and pills were prescribed as a
continuing precaution.
Von shows signs of daily improvement,
and has returned to her normal daily schedule!
:)
04/10/06: Von is showing daily improvement in
her infected breast.
The swelling has gone down dramatically and the
infection area is nearly indistinguishable!
She is continuing with her antibiotics thru the
end of this week.
04/07/06: Von's new supply of medication arrived
yesterday evening and we are hoping this is all she will need.
Von is feeling well enough that she has been
working
half days this week.
04/05/06: Great news! Von's surgeon is delighted
with her progress and does not want to operate! We need to convince the infection specialist to feel the same. So
far he is unwilling to continue Von's antibiotic treatments, but he's not the only doctor in town.
UPDATE: the infection specialist has agreed to give Von antibiotic treatments
until April 15th!
04/03/06: Von is continuing with her home antibiotic
treatments. Unfortunately, there has not been any significant improvement over the last couple days.
04/01/06: Vonnie is home and receiving her antibiotics
this morning from a health care nurse. This will happen twice a day for the next week.
03/31/06: Von will be released from the hospital
around 2pm today. She is still not out of the woods and we ask everyone to continue thinking positive thoughts as well
as sending their prayers for her recovery.
03/30/06: Von's doctor grudgingly
agreed this morning to let her go home with the understanding that at the first sign of trouble she should immediately return
to the hospital. Vonnie is giving herself one week for the infection to be completely gone, otherwise she will relent and
proceed with the surgery to remove the implants. Von will be discharged sometime tomorrow afternoon.
03/29/06: Vonnie has improved some more today
and got a supportive visit from her doctor this morning.
03/28/06: Vonnie has shown signs
of getting better. We talked her surgeon into giving Von 48 more hours to see if there is any more significant improvement.
Otherwise, she will proceed with the surgery Thursday afternoon. We ask that everyone send positive waves Vonnie's way
so she can experience her own little miracle.
03/28/06: Vonnie is scheduled to
have her implants taken back out this afternoon.
03/27/06: Vonnie has not been responding
to the antibiotics and it looks very much like her implants will need to be removed, probably tomorrow.
03/26/06: Vonnie was checked into Memorial Hospital
in Tampa last night as she is fighting an infection.
Please keep her in your prayers.
03/23/06: Von had her drain tubes
removed yesterday and is dealing with severe pain, a mild fever, and slight nausea.
She is home resting uncomfortably
in bed.
Angel is keeping her company.
03/17/06: Vonnie's implant surgery
yesterday went off without a hitch. She is resting at home.
