This collection of poet Robert Burns’ lyrics, some time-honored songs, others
especially set to music by Alton Rinker, is most sympathetically sung by Jo Stafford.
Miss Stafford, justly famed as one of America's most accomplished and versatile singers, is accompanied by Paul Weston and
his Orchestra. These recordings have never been issued on Compact Disc and have not been made available since the LP's original
release in 1956.
Stafford's smooth, supple voice and straightforward honesty of interpretation is particularly delightful in these songs, reflecting
her long interest in the folk songs of America and other lands, an interest that resulted in the annual Jo Stafford Prize
in American Folk Lore.
The versatility displayed by this brilliant artist in her varied collections is equally visible in her warm-hearted singing
here.
Alton Rinker, one of the country's leading composers of popular songs, first set My Jean to music, and became so interested
that he wrote the other new songs in this collection, to form a cycle. Mr. Rinker's settings are as true to Burns’ intent
as are Miss Stafford's interpretations.
The result is a singularly touching evocation of the Scottish Highlands, strong, sweet and filled throughout with honest sentiment.
