George Takei was born on April 20, 1939 in the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles, Ca. During World War II his family was forced to relocate in an internment camp in Arkansas (Camp Rohwer). They were moved again to another internment camp (Tule Lake) in Northern California. Prior to acting, he was originally interested in being an architect and began his college studies at the University of California at Berkeley while at the same time training as an actor at the Desilu workshop.

George became a member of the Star Trek cast when he was offered the role of Lt. Hikaru Sulu as the helmsman for the Starship U. S. S. Enterprise. He also appeared in the movie Green Berets, Mission Impossible, and PT 109. He also appeared in the first six Star Trek movies starring the original cast members. After Star Trek he made appearances in the "Six Million Dollar Man", "Hawaii Five-O" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep."

George became interested in politics and became a California representative at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. In 1973 he won Mayor Bradley's vacated council seat in Los Angeles where he became a mainstream of American and Asian-American culture by being one of the few prominent Asian-Americans brave enough to publically and politically rally for the long overdue compensation of Issei (first generations of Japanese who came to America) and Neissi (second generation Japanese) who were stripped of their property without due process and sent to internment camps.

A community activist, George serves on the board of governors of East West Players, the nation's foremost Asian Pacific American theater. He is chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of the Japanese American National Museum and on the advisory committee of the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program.
