I found the dreaded red bugs on one of my acros. Coincidentally, this coral has not been looking great and has shown no new growth for months.

Click on the bug for details on the red bug treatment protocol devised by Dustin Dorton of ORA. It uses a dog heatworm medication to kill these pesky crustaceans.

This is the most obvious infestation, but every coral that has been growing slowly (or not at all) has at least a few.

I have already procured Interceptor pills from our vet and am preparing 50 gallons of water for a massive water change.  I am trying to catch my cleaner and peppermint shrimp to spare them from the treatment. I have a couple of brown, hairy-legged crabs that may succumb during the treatment, but that would probably be a good thing. So far, I have captured one peppermint with a soda bottle trap. It is currently residing in the quarantine tank with my new orchid dottyback.

I will take the pills to work for crushing and weighing. I work for an environmental laboratory, so I have access to accurate scales.
