Having worked with computers for 20+ years, I have seen my share of equipment killed by power problems. Given the financial and emotional investment a large reef tank, it does not make sense to trust my AquaController, Tunze controllers, IceCap ballasts, and the other more mundane electronic devices to a $20 surge protector that may or may not work when I need it most.

Last winter (2003/2004), IceCap floated the idea of marketing the Zero Surge devices under their name.  They bought some for their own testing and solicited other reefers to try them on their own tank. I bought one in February,  intending to eventually get a second one so I could protect both dedicated circuits.  After a power surge in July killed a GFCI outlet, caused some AquaController problems, and delayed my family’s departure for vacation, I finally “got around to it” and added the second Zero Surge.

The the protection provided by the Zero Surge is far superior to the typical Home Depot surge suppressor, which relies on MOVs to absorb surges. The Zero Surge web site explains this all much better than I can. Mine are buried in a corner and are not terribly photogenic, so if you want to see what they look like, take a look at the pictures on their website.
