The Story of Meeting Lisa

During the middle of December 2000, I found Lisa's now-defunct personal webpage (technically, I asked someone to "find her" for me). I emailed Lisa and said I was looking for the Lisa who played "Cara"...

She responded...
"Hi! Yes I played Cara on the Wonder Years. What do you want to know? I'd be happy to talk to you about it (or email, as it were)."

I brazenly asked her to send me something (like a picture), and asked some basic questions, to which she replied...
"Kyle, you ask a lot of questions. If you want me to send you something, I'll try, although I don't make a habit of proving myself to strangers. I'll send you my headshot from the academy players directory. Only I have access to that, so it should be proof enough..."

Oops! I apologized profusely for offending her :-) - then sent this..."I hope you will be gracious enough to put up with me just a little bit longer :-) On behalf of the TWY community, I do have a lot of questions - but what do you expect - you're the actress and have fans :-) I would like to put up an official "Lisa Gerber" page on my TWY site because, as I said, there isn't one anywhere. The things I would like to include are the basic bio stuff, more photos, a complete "filmography", your comments about TWY in general, and "Cara" and the two episodes you were in specifically, comments (if you have any) on your other acting roles, future updates, and anything else you think would be of interest" (blah blah blah.)

A couple days before Christmas, she replied...
"Kyle, I am very flattered! I would definitely be interested in that page but give me a while before I can get ALL that info to you. I'm going out of town for a couple weeks..."

A couple weeks later, in the middle of January 2001, I boldly I asked to meet for breakfast or something. She replied...
"Sure, I'd like to meet you for lunch or breakfast or something. Just warning you though...I'm not fourteen anymore! And send me the link for your page so I can see how it's coming!"

I replied it was a good thing she was not 14 anymore, and gave her the URL. I was going to Las Vegas for business and would "talk" later...(Note, I had not yet "published" the LG page...and what I had was finished in an hour back in December...)

Toward the last week of January, I again suggested a meeting :-) She replied...
"Kyle, Unfortunately I am leaving to visit a friend in Berkeley tomorrow. When I get back would work though, which will be on Monday. Hope you had fun in Vegas and won big!"

(I did not have fun, and did not gamble...)

After returning from Las Vegas, I said "hey", more or less. She said she "will be in touch about this week."

We are now in the first week of February...I again emailed her about the upcoming Saturday (I only have Saturday off for much of the year...) Got no response Friday nite or Sat AM. After going out for location pix, I emailed her about the beautiful day it was, taking pix, and the country store location. She replied...
"Hi Kyle. The country store is pretty far away. It's way up in the mountains somewhere. My mom drove me, so I don't really remember. I will write to you soon to let you know when a good meeting time would be for me. Have a nice weekend!"

Hmmm...

On February 22, I again asked about the coming Saturday. She replied...
"Hi Kyle, Can you do a late lunch on Saturday? I'm busy the rest of the day. Let me know."
I asked "when and where?".
She replied..."Kyle, Two questions...can you come out to S***********? And do you mind if my boyfriend joins us?"
I said "yes" and "OK". (Like I was really gonna say "no"?)
She replied..."Great. Then how about S*** H****** at 2:00 on Saturday. It is on X**** and Y****...looking foward. Should I bring anything?"
I said (among other things) bring pix and be prepared to answer questions.:-)
She said..."Wow. This is kind of like an interview...I'll try to remember stuff."
Of course, I forgot she already told me what time to meet, so I asked "what time?" :-)
She replied..."Two o'clock silly. I told you that. Keep your head in the game. You're dealing with a star now. Just kidding !!!!!!!!"

Finally! It was gonna happen!

Then early Saturday...
"Kyle, I hate to do this to you but something came up and I was wondering if we could reschedule (same time same place) for tomorrow. I hope you can still make it. Sorry about the late notice. Let me know."

Argh! I knew it was too good to be true...

Since I was working Sundays at that point, I gave her a list of possibilities, and left to take some more location pix (in the rain, which actually produces the best pictures - no shadows...)
She replied..."I'm so sorry. I can make it Tuesday at around six thirty (or later) or Sunday evening or basically any day of the week for dinner."
I suggested Sunday for dinner instead of lunch. She suggested a sushi place. I said "not even at gun-point" - although I said I could drink tea and ask questions :-). She replied..."Well, I won't make you eat sushi. Lemme think....how about...I**** deli on W*****. I will see you there around 6:30?"

I said OK. And so it finally happened on a rainy night on February 25, 2001. We spent about an hour in a question-and-answer session over dinner. I found her to be very nice and friendly, and she had a big smile that we never saw on "Cara". I asked about favorite music..."I'm a big music fan and can appreciate it all...my favorite band changes every day." She likes sushi, and even took my cole slaw. Ugh! I didn't ask if she likes liver. I was gonna ask to borrow her copy of "Brooklyn Bridge" and "The Others" that she was in, but she doesn't have one, herself. Oh, well. It was all...wonderful. :-0
