What is Family Child Care?

Why Family Child Care???
F amily child care
is child care provided in a persons home as opposed to a facility totally for child care. A provider usually cares for 6-10
children. Family child care providers are not baby sitters. They devote their ‘working hours’ to the children
in their care. Usually one or more rooms in the home are set up with the children in mind. Many provide ‘centers’
for the children, such as: housekeeping, block area, book corner, art area, and toy area. Each home setting is unique reflecting
the providers ‘touch’.
The first few years of a child's life are very important for brain development and cognition.
It's the time when brain cells form most of their connections. children need lots of individualized care and stimulation.
From the time they enter kindergarten and for the rest of their school years, they will
be in a large group setting, usually 20 or more. Family child care (6-10) gives the opportunity
for "a step in between" home and school. With the small group size they can receive the attention and stimulation they need
that is so hard to give each child in a large setting. In a family child care setting, the provider gets to know the children
very well and the child has a consistent adult to relate to. Large group settings often have a large turn over in teachers
and the consistency is missing.
F amily child care also
can go on field trips more easily. Many times large centers cannot leave the center with the children or they do not have
enough transportation for all the children. Also with the large numbers it is difficult for the teachers to provide much more
than physical care. Some large settings overcome the problems that face them with such large numbers of children.
No one type of child care is the total answer. But–family child care
does provide an alternative, you must decide what’s right for you and your child.
F amily child care
is not babysitting. There are babysitters out there and they can be an appropriate alternative when you want a night out alone.
Family child care providers do have family child care associations they can join, conferences they can attend, gold seal status
and national accreditation they can work towards. Find out how active and enthusiastic the provider is.
F amily child care
may be the right choice for your child. You will be glad you looked into it.
