Child Discipline Policy

UNDER STATE AND COUNTY REGULATIONS PERTAINING TO DISCIPLINE IN FAMILY DAY CARE HOMES:

1) Children in a Family Day Care Home should be disciplined only in a constructive manner.

2) Children shall not be subjected to discipline which is severe, humiliating or frightening.

3) Discipline shall not be associated with food, rest or toileting.

4) Spanking or any other form of physical punishment is prohibited.

In compliance with the above, and with recommended child care practices, the following method of discipline will be used in my Family Day Care Home:

If the child is out of control: e.g. hitting, kicking, throwing, biting, or pushing, etc... He/She will be taken to the 'Quiet Area' where there is a table to relax at and be alone for awhile. There is a puzzle and some small manipulatives he/she may use. When the child has calmed down we will discuss the feelings he/she was experiencing. Acceptable alternatives will be discussed. When the child feels in control, he/she may rejoin the other children. The children may use this area to come to any time they feel they would like to be alone for awhile.

Emergency Plan

In case of a fire:

The children know to leave by the exit closest to them at that moment. They exit and go to the playground in the side yard. We have monthly fire drills to reinforce this knowledge. There are smoke alarms in every room except the bathrooms and kitchen. The fire extinguisher is located in the toy room next to the kitchen. It is mounted on the wall by the door to the kitchen. The smoke detectors and the fire extinguishers are checked out after each fire drill. The first aid kit is located on the top shelf of the closet in the bathroom near the kitchen.

For Tornados:

The children and I go to the the hallway near the kitchen. It has no windows and is located in the center of the house. We have monthly tornado drills also. We go to the hallway, close the door and  crouch down with our arms covering our eyes and back of our neck.

In case of an approaching Hurricane:

When and if there is a Hurricane warning and suggested evacuation the parents know they are to pick up their child.   I may have to leave and meet Rik in a designated emergency management capacity\.
