This is my newest project!  My first car was a 1968 Bug that had been used as a dog house for about 3 years!!!  It was, and still is a crude and primitive car but boy do I have fond memories of driving it and working on it!  I learned how to work on cars from that old bug and I owe my addiction to VW's in general to that very first bug.  I want to take it back to show room original so I will always be on the lookout for OEM and NOS parts.  If you have any, drop me a line.  You may have something I need.  I don't know how long it will take to redo the car and I am not in a hurry so please enjoy the ride with me as this classic gets rebuilt!

First some BEFORE pictures.  The wheels and tires are off because they were all flat.  I will repaint the wheels and then have new tires installed as step #1 in this whole project!

Newly rebuilt and cleaned up speedo.  I really wanted it reset to 0 miles but the guy who did the rebuild, wouldn't do it.

After removing the bumpers and fenders, I discovered some hidden damage on the left front.  Not too bad and it was repaired pretty well so I may just smooth it out a bit more, sand, paint with POR 15 and then topcoat with body color.

I had the wheels sand blasted so that I can repaint them the stock Lotus White (rim) and Grey Black (hub).  These pictures show the front of two that have been primed and three that have been painted on the back and sides with POR 15.  Boy, that stuff dries hard as a rock, especially since it was 104 degrees F on the day I painted them.  They got baked on the driveway and according to my Infrared Thermometer, the maximum surface temperature on the wheels was 148 degrees F.

Pictures below are the car after some extensive disassembly.  Last pictures are of the car body on stands separated from the chassis.

Bugengine.jpg

Here is the engine for the bug in its torn apart shape.  I bought this about a year ago from a soldier in Killeen, Texas who had owned it for many years. It is a stock 1500cc, single port, single relief engine.  When I disassembled the case, I discovered that all the internals were still original VW parts, the motor had never been disassembled before!!!!  It may not need too much work but I will have case savers installed and align bored if needed.

Newtransmission.jpg

Here is my transmission.  I purchased this slightly used from another VW fan.  He had purchased it from Wright Gearbox and used it in his Karman Ghia for about 3 months before deciding to upgrade the engine and transmission.  The transmission still has the rebuilders paint and sticker on it.

July 09 -Here are three pictures of the chassis and transmission in various stages of restoration.  I used losts of Por 15 and Rustoleum in the process.  Body is currently in the body shop getting all fixed up.
