You might truly believe that you can't learn, but in fact the reasons that stop people learning
are:
- It is public. You are out there for people to see. You don't want to look silly - and you really think you will.
- You've had some past experience that reinforces this fear.
- You think you're awkward and not coordinated.
- You've seen the latest TV dance shows and you think could never be that good.
These reasons are not real at all - they are just fear and anxiety which is perfectly normal. Everyone
feels this way when they start. A teacher can help you with this by introducing the right material at the right pace
in an effective way. Our methods and dance material are carefully designed for this.
The reality of learning to dance is that you are learning some new physical skills
and some strange new knowledge at the same time. You are at once training your body and your mind. This takes a little more effort than just one or the other. It takes a little more time and perseverance.
Understanding this can make things much easier.
Physically there is nothing stopping you. If you can walk - you can dance.
Dancing the different styles is just different kinds of walking. The art of dance teaching
is all about making things easy and fun. It's not easy making things easy and some methods work better for different
people than others.
A good dance teacher is firstly a good people-person and good communicator.
Secondly, they need to understand how the learner is feeling - have empathy for them -
remembering what it is like to learn. Thirdly of course they need to know their
dancing.
