Okay...let's get one thing out of the way...I
am a Katatonia fan-boy so this will be a somewhat biased review.
I first came across Katatonia when "Tonight's Decision"
came out. It was a time when all I wanted to listen to was dark and depressing lyrics. I was at the local CD shop which mainly
focuses on death and black metal but sometimes you could find some power, progressive or some gothic metal etc. I was talking
to the guy who worked there and he suggested Katatonia and played it....boy was I hooked.
The music was dark and atmospheric
and the vocals let out a sound of total hopelessness and despair....I loved it!!!! I then proceeded to get "Discouraged Ones"
and later "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and loved them all. My favorite tracks were always the slowest ones thet dripped with
despair. Their new one seems to have less than that.
It seems that they have gone a little heavier (or at least heavier
on more songs) on this album and some of those tracks seem to tire for me. None of the songs are bad or anything...they are
all quite good... just a personal taste I guess. The vocals are still filled with pain and boy...that drummer is mad. Usually
I like my drums kind of simple (power metal) with some variation and..I guess they are called fills. This guy is all over
the place in some of these songs and still manage to keep it constant, flowing and yet incredibly creative (at least to these
ears)
The songs all have some good hooks and catch to the ear...a very good and solid album.
Favorites: Ghost
in the Sun, Criminals, A Premonition, Burn the Remembrence, One Year From Now ...all hell most of them
