The first thing I should tell you is that power
metal is my normal listening style. I used to buy everything that came out that had the description "similar to Helloween,
Blind Guardian etc etc etc." And 5 years later, if you are like me, you are tired of hearing the same thing over and over
again and it takes a little something extra in the power metal genre to catch your ear. Judging by this text, I am sure you
have guessed that Galloglass has done this and you would be right. This is an album that I would pick up a year from now and
probably enjoy.
I will now make you suffer thru a reviewer cliche I have probably read a thousand times and say....
"While Galloglass is not reinventing the wheel their music is well done etc...blah blah" But this is how I feel. They have
a nice mix of speedier songs and mid-paced tracks that breaks up the monotany that many power metal albums have. A couple
tracks infuse a violin that adds depth to the sound while not taking the song over.
The vocalist is an average vocalist
in the upper mid-range, who only really bothers me when he tries to hit the high notes which cause a few of the hairs on the
back of my head to stand up, but other than that, he is very listenable. The guitars are well played (keep in mind I don't
play guitar and am no expert by any stretch of the imagination). The drummer seems quite comfortable speeding through songs
with a double-bass attack or mid-paced chunkers (and does both in many songs). The production is on par with all of the LMP
releases with no real shortcomings of any kind.
This is recommended for all power metal heads and those that dabble
in it and like a quality release.
