My first experience with The 69 Eyes was the
video for The Chair on the compilation DVD Beauty in Darkness, Vol.5. After I saw it, I was hooked.
At the time, I was starting to get into this whole goth-rock thing (initially it was the band To Die For) and the video, while
fairly normal, was set to a killer goth-rock song. I began seeking out their CDs and found their earlier stuff not to
my liking, but what they have turned into was exactly what I was looking for.
Devils begins with a few typical, yet good goth-rock songs. Not
technical or complex, just simple hooks and catchy choruses. Nothing mindblowing, but entertaining. The fourth
song Sister of Charity is a little different. While the underlying style is the same, it infuses some other
elements. A little Gregorian style voices and a rather epic chorus with a mix of male and female vocals.
A nice change of pace for the album. The next several songs fall into the typical, high-quality 69 style of tunes,
the only weak track being August Moon...it just begins to feel redundant. The last song Only You Can Save
Me is a nice slow paced, softer song to mellow out the end of the disc...another really good song.
The 69 Eyes have released some high quality albums recently and are among
the cream of the crop in this genre. What sets them apart is the songs are memorable and keep you humming after
the songs are over. What sets them apart from other good bands is the deep, dark vocals of Jyrki69. Devils
lives up to those standards easily and is among their best ever. If you are interested in goth, you can start here.
A high quality disc.
