Here we have former Grave Digger guitarist Uwe Lulis' band Rebellion with their third album.  Going back, I must say I only mildly enjoyed Macbeth, never heard Born a Rebel because the title scared me away and was worried it would just be horrible so I never bothered.  After hearing what their new on was about (Vikings etc), I thought I'd give it a shot.

Musically, it is what I expect.  Some long, epic tracks, some double bass neck breakers and a few mid-paced head bobbers to mix it all up.  Vocally, it is what I expected as well...gruff & rough mid-range rumbling similar to Grave Digger's, just not as high of a pitch and some great sing-songy choruses.  All ingredients to a great heavy, power metal album...it's just not that great.

The stories (included in the packaging in English and German) are great and, I am assuming, accurate but some of the songs are too wordy...historically speaking.  Singing 'King of..., Earl of..., Son of...' in the songs kind of get old.  I guess it is hard not to do that repeatedly when constructing concept albums such as this, but I figure if they are going to include the stories in the liner notes, do we need all the names in the songs as well?  Just a thought.

Overall, it is a decent album but some of the songs get a little redundant and are just a little too long.

Favorites: Ynglinga Saga, Treason, Harald Hadrade, Eric the Red
