Charismatic vocals.....check.
Good production....check.
Catchy songs....check.
Variety....no-check.
I have been a HIM fan for 5 years now, have all the albums and even the singles box...but
the last two albums (Love Metal and this one) have left me kinda....blah.
Most people are familiar with HIM and I will assume that you (the reader) are as well.
The problem with this album is the vanilla nature of the songs. All of HIM's albums have several ultra-catchy, radio-friendly
gothy songs...this one does to but there are no songs out of HIM's norm. On Razorblade Romance and Deep
Thoughts.... there were songs that added character to the albums (Love you Like I Do, Beautiful, Close to the Flame,
Gone with the Sin) and on Dark Light there are none..... while the songs are good...they tend to run together
and are interchangeable.
My other complaint is the same-ness of Ville's vocals on all the songs. On previous
albums he would sing softer or rougher or just different, while on this album, he sings the same on almost every song.
I know I sound rough on this album, I actually do like it...it just does not measure
up to previous works (despite the mainstream hype) for me. Maybe in time it will grow more and I will find those character
songs...I just can't right now.
