Growing

Where can you obtain herbs?  What are the best sources?

  • Cullinary herbs can be purchased from nurseries.  These range from hobby businesses to major hardware chains such.
  • Herbs, in particular the more unusual, can be grown from seed, or small plants can be bought via mail order.  The company I have received consistently good results from is Richters.
  • Cuttings from other plants.
  • Herbs can also be propogated by layering.

When picking herb plants consider whether they are annual (1 year life), biennial (2/3 year lifecycle), or perennial (last multiple seasons).

Whether your perennial plants will survive the winter depends on their tollerance to cold.  The seller will tell you to what zone the plant is hardy.  You can find the zone you live in from sites such as Home Depot, gardening books or asking your local nurery.  For example, my part of New Jersey is 6A.
