January 2008
We left New Orleans (after another serving of Coffee and Beignets) on Sunday morning and decided to take a "back way"
home via some of the classic old Southern plantations. We spent a couple of hours visiting the "Lara Plantation" and had a
glimpse of life on an old Southern Cotton plantation, complete with Negro slave labour. It was amazing to see what was accepted
and expected back in the mid to late 1800's. To us the most moving aspect was considering how humans were treated as property
back then - very sad.
We then left after lunch at a local restaurant to drive the 10 hours home. I found what looked like a good shortcut through
some of the Bayou country, but when we arrived at a place called "Bayou Pigeon - The End Of The World" we were starting to
get a little worried. What looked like a shortcut through to the interstate turned out to be 10 miles of dirt road through
some pretty "interesting" country - lots of little trailers camped out in the backwoods, with many "trespassers will be shot"
signs, and I'm sure we saw a few moonshine stills....
Still we made it and arrived home about midnight - and another great experience exploring more of the United States.
