May 2008
We left Halifax one morning to drive the 2 hours up to Pictou where we could take the ferry across
the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island. A one hour ferry trip deposited us at Wood Islands where we could then
start exploring the island. As we always find in our travels, it is another beautiful location that we could easily spend a
week exploring. However we only had a day there so could only touch the highlights.
We had a picnic lunch in a park in the capital of the Island - Charlottetown, and then drove
up through the beautiful rolling farmland to Cavendish, home of Green Gables. Green Gables was made famous by LM Montgomery
and her series of books based on "Anne Of Green Gables". This has always been a favourite of the girls Grandmothers and Em
and Erin have also developed a love for the Anne books. So we had to see the actual place where the author lived and wrote.
We then spent a lovely afternoon playing on Cavendish beach which is on the Gulf Of St Lawrence and very cold, followed by
dinner in a little restaurant in Cavendish.
By this time we had missed the last ferry home so we had to drive back via the large bridge to
New Brunswick. It's a 14 km toll bridge and I was thinking maybe $5. Try $45 to get across one-way - ouch! But it was worth
the visit......
