The Historic Triangle of Virginia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and is the foundation of
America's early history.
Williamsburg started out as a fortified settlement known as "Middle Plantation" in the 1630's, and is located on a peninsula
between the James and York rivers. It became the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1698 when it was renamed Williamsburg.
It received a "Royal Charter" as a city in 1722 and it was the center of politics in the early Virginia colonies leading
up to the American Revolution and the declaration of independence.
The conservation and restoration of Williamsburg commenced in the early 1900's but it was in the 1920's, with the
financial backing of the Rockefeller family that Colonial Williamsburg was established on a 300 acre historic area. Today
Colonial Williamsburg is a "living history" attraction and exists as a fully functional recreation of life in the 1700's.
It is also Virginia's largest tourist attraction.
