From Virginia Beach, we drove about an hour up to Virginia's Historic Triangle. We have really enjoyed exploring some of the amazing history of the United States in our time here, and this area was one of the highlights so far.

The Historic Triangle is a National Park area and consists of 3 settlements - Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Unfortunately we only had a day, and so only managed to fit in Williamsburg and Jamestown on this visit. But we really hope to visit the area again one day in the future.

The Historic Triangle of Virginia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and is the foundation of America's early history.

Williamsburg started out as a fortified settlement known as "Middle Plantation" in the 1630's, and is located on a peninsula between the James and York rivers. It became the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1698 when it was renamed Williamsburg. It received a "Royal Charter" as a city in 1722 and it was the center of politics in the early Virginia colonies leading up to the American Revolution and the declaration of independence.

The conservation and restoration of Williamsburg commenced in the early 1900's but it was in the 1920's, with the financial backing of the Rockefeller family that Colonial Williamsburg was established on a 300 acre historic area. Today Colonial Williamsburg is a "living history" attraction and exists as a fully functional recreation of life in the 1700's. It is also Virginia's largest tourist attraction.
