Jamestown is located on Jamestown Island in the James river, and is regarded as the first permanent English settlement in the USA. It was founded in 1607 and remained the capital of the colony for 83 years until the capital was moved to Williamsburg. Jamestown island is a national park site today and can be visited to see the ruins of the early settlement, as well as the beautiful natural forest that the first settlers would have encountered. Jamestown island is still in its minimally excavated natural state. There is a "living history" recreation of the settlement called funnily enough "Jamestown Settlement" but we didn't visit that. We did spend a couple of hours walking around the island and enjoying the beautiful natural scenery and the peacefulness of the ruins.

Jamestown island is part of Virginias Historic Triangle along with Williamsburg and Yorktown. Yorktown was the location where General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at the end of the revolutionary war, leading the way for the independence of the USA.
