The bloody Wheat Field

(ABOVE) - the "Wheat Field" saw some of the most intensive and bloody fighting of the entire civil war. In one 2 and a half hour period on the afternoon of July 2, second day, 4000 men were killed here as this field changed hands 6 times. After the battle, the bodies were so thick it was possible to walk across the wheat field without actually touching the ground.....

(BELOW) The Fighting Irish.....
 
The Irish Brigade was formed from Irish immigrants who wanted to fight to defend their new country of residence. This statue represents the famous Irish chaplain - Father William Corby - giving absolution to the men of the Irish brigade before they went into battle. They became known as "The Fighting Irish" and later on, when Father Corby became president of Notre Dame university, the ND football team also took on, and are known today, as the Fighting Irish
