Early records show that Catherine { Hundiger?} Niederer along with three of her sons, 1.} Joseph jr. {b-1816}, his wife Anna T. Niederer, their son Alexander {b-9-1856, 7 months old } , 2.} Charles Joseph {b-1833} , and  3.} Christian {b-1835} , his wife Mary & daughter Mary { 4 yrs old} came to the United States from Switzerland in 1857.  Joseph jr. his wife Anna and brother Charles Joseph were listed on the ship "Danube", arriving in the N.Y. harbor April 23, 1857. The journey to the states took 1 month. The Niederer family first settled in Utica, N.Y.

Christian and his brother Charles applied for citizenship March 15, 1858 Oneida county N.Y.                                

1860 Utica , N.Y. 8th ward Joseph jr., wife Anna, sons Alexander and Christian {b-1859 } , brother Charles Joseph, and  their mother Catherine are living in the same home. Christian wife Mary and daughter Mary are listed in the 5th ward.

January 1, 1865 Charles Joseph marries Margaret Pfeiffer at the Zion Lutheran Church Utica, N.Y. it lists the canton "Aargau" Switzerland  as his birthplace.

In 1865 Joseph jr,  wife Anna and sons  Alexander & Christian were listed in the Syracuse, NY census living next door to his brother Charles Joseph and wife Margaret{ Pfeiffer} Niederer.

Christian is naturalized 10-20-1862, Charles J. 2-12-1872

Their brother Christian had enlisted in the 186th Inf. N.Y. in 1864. On June 2,1865 he had left the organization.

Between 1860 & 1870 Catherine Niederer and Mary the daughter of Christian and Mary died in Utica, N.Y

By 1870 Charles Joseph & his family had moved back to Utica, N.Y.. He and his brother Christian & his wife Mary were living in the 8th ward Utica, N.Y. Between 1870 & 1874 Christian and his wife moved to St. Joseph, MIchigan where he is listed on the 1880 census as a carpenter.

Joseph jr. and his sons Alexander and Christian established "Syracuse basket manufacturers"  they were craftsman in the willow basket industry. Joseph jr.'s brother ,Charles Joseph is also listed as a basketmaker in Utica, N.Y.
