Phone service was established at the White House soon after its invention. President Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881) was the first to have phone service. Fifteen years after its invention there were five million phones in America.

In a similar fifteen year span after the invention of the wireless (cell) phone, there were more than 33 million cell phones in the U.S.

The first coast to coast phone line was established in 1914.

When Alexander Graham Bell died on August 4, 1922, millions of phones went dead. All phones in the USA and Canada, served by the Bell Company, were shut down for one minute in Bell's honor.
