Coaxial A cable composed of an insulated central conducting wire wrapped in another cylindrical conducting wire. There is a second insulating layer followed by an outer protective layer.
Data compression Reducing the size of a file of data by eliminating unnecessary information, such as blanks, and redundant data. The idea of reducing the size is to save money on transmission or to save money on storing data.
Deaf mute A person who is unable to hear or speak.
Dial tone The sound you hear when you pick up a telephone. It comes from the switch in the central office and is to signal you that the line is ready for you to begin dialing.
Dick Tracy In the 1930’s Mobsters like Al Capone ruled Chicago, Chester Gould decided the public needed a crime-fighting hero, so he created a comic strip with Dick Tracy, a square jawed, trench coated police detective who continues to appear in newspaper comic strips even today.
Divested, divestiture On January 8, 1982 AT&T signed a consent decree with the United States Department of Justice stipulating that on midnight December 30, 1983 AT&T would divest or separate itself from its 22 operating companies. These 22 operating companies were formed into seven regional holding companies that became know as the “Baby Bells”. This was intended to create a level playing field for other telephone companies to compete with the resulting RBOC’s (Regional Bell Operating Companies).
Divestiture The process of shedding some business functions from the parent company.
Electricity Electricity is the flow of electrons, protons or charged ions through a wire or a fluid.
Electrical Current Current is a measure of how much electricity passes a point on a wire in a given time frame. Current is measured in amps or amperes. The symbol for current is “I”…see also Ohm’s Law.
Electrochemical The science that deals with the relation of electricity to chemical changes and with the inter conversion of chemical and electrical energy.
Electromagnetism Magnetism created by an electrical current or electricity flowing through a coil of wire wrapped around of iron
Error detection and correction The most simplified method of error detecting or checking is parity. The parity is set to either even or odd by the transmitting device and the receiving device is set accordingly. The transmitting device sets the parity bit to a level that makes the total number of 1’s in the character always even (even parity) or always odd (odd parity)

Giga bps or Gbps A transmission speed of one billion bits of data per second.
Google An internet search engine similar to Jeeves and Dogpile that enables the user to search for information using their computer.
Great Wall of China A wall built along the northern border of China to keep the Huns from invading. I was built over 2000 years ago and is 4000 miles long, 15 to 30 feet wide, and about 25 feet high. It can be seen by astronauts in Earth orbit but is not visible from the moon according astronauts Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Jim Irwin.
Handset The part of the telephone in the hand to speak and listen. It contains a transmitter and receiver.
