GUEST OPERATOR POLICY: Draft 2, 3/11/2008

DEFINITION:"Guests" are operators that range from 4 yr olds in their parent’s arms to people who have logged less than 15 hours or 5 days. They may also be NMRA members who run infrequently on our layout. They have not attended a setup or takedown.

GUIDELINES FOR SUPERVISOR:
All Guests should have a willing adult supervisor who is a regular (experienced) participant. If appropriate, this will be a parent or grandparent. If this supervisor should leave for an extended time, an alternate needs to be arranged and made known to the Guest. It is the supervisor’s responsibility:

  1. to manage the Code of Conduct (below) for these guests.
  2. to train them on what equipment they may borrow and what is off limits.
  3. to train them on operation protocol.to help them get a train running and out onto the mainline.
  4. introduce them to the yardmaster (red vest).
  5. to keep an "eye" on the guest. If they start to violate protocol, abuse equipment, etc., take appropriate action. If they start to wander, recommend a break or other action.
  6. monitor the duration. Work with the yardmaster if present, to manage the overall capacity for guests. Any member who feels the guest is acting inappropriately, should notify the yardmaster.
  7. if they participate frequently (five or more times), they are encouraged to:
    provide trains of their own.
    help with setup/takedown.
    become an NMRA member.

CODE OF CONDUCT (age/experience/ability appropriate): (To be shared with the guest and checked for understanding):

  1. I will wear a "guest symbol" if staying more than 30 minutes. Supervisor too.
  2. I recognize that all this equipment is very delicate and will treat it gently (cabs, scenery, and trains).
  3. I will use the 4D loaners OR my own trains if available. I must get permission to use ANY other member’s equipment.
  4. I will pay attention to my train at all times:
    watch for stopped trains ahead
watch the rear of my train if I stop
return turnouts to their "normal" position
will not walk away leaving a train running
  5. I will not ride around on the carts.
  6. I understand that running time is limited and determined by the yardmaster or supervisor.
