SIG Equipment Standards
Modules standards and recommended practices follow those published by the NMRA in large part. However,
we are using a different standard for electrical connections based on Molex connectors. Please request the Standard &
Recommended Practices for information on module standards. Check with the Trainmaster or an Assistant Trainmaster
for help with electrical connections.
The SIG layout is configured to run both DC and DCC equipped locomotives. While we intend to make
DC operating time available on the layout at every show or event, the clear operational advantages presented by the DCC system
will dictate that the majority of the time we will be running under DCC. As such, additional equipment requirements will come
into play. These include:
- All cars should be equipped with metal wheels, properly gauged and cleaned regularly
- All cars must meet minimum NMRA weight standards
(1 ounce plus ½ ounce per inch of car length)
All cars must be equipped with knuckle couplers meeting height and swing standards
(unless they are not intended for interchange use)
Locomotive and car wheels must be cleaned on a regular basis
(this is critical to good operations)
Responsibility for equipment maintenance rests with individual members. Derailments and operating
problems cause the public to wander away looking for other layouts that are running trains, and they’re not much fun
for us either. Any car or locomotive that proves to have difficulty running may be removed from the mainline and returned
to the owner with a Bad Order Card. Rolling stock so removed may be barred from running on the layout until the problem has
been fixed to the satisfaction of the Trainmaster or the Maintenance Foreman. Likewise, modules that do not
meet the required operational standards may be rejected for show participation until the modules are deemed acceptable by
the Trainmaster or the Maintenance Foreman.
