Jupiter's Moons

Jupiter's large Galilean moons are substantial satellites.  Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon is bigger than Mercury and has its own magnetic field.  Callisto is about the size of Mercury and may have an ocean underneath its heavily cratered surface.  Io is a little bigger than our Moon and is the most volcanic body in the Solar System.  Europa has ice geysers at its south pole and almost surely has an ocean beneath its icy surface.

Title lists from left to right. Callisto was way out there. Europa cast the shadow.

Four separate images were combined. Moons were placed proportionately from Jupiter.

Same as above picture except moons were moved 4 times closer to Jupiter

Here are just the moons. If you look closely, you can see a little surface detail on three of them.

Shadow is farther from moon now due to angle between Sun and Jupiter. GRS was almost there too...

Europa's coloring surprised me, maybe it's the dark splotchy face

Got out late but captured this before Jupiter descended too much. No time for high magnification.

Not a great picture of Io...

Just as I was setting up I saw this. Couldn't get the magnifier set up before the shadow went away

Transparency wasn't great so these are at F/10

Io, Europa, and Ganymede were hanging out together on 6-24. Callisto didn't join the party.

Here's a pic of Jupiter on the morning of 6/12/2008.  Jupiter was still pretty low in the sky but after I was done with minor planet Juno, I took a few quick films of it anyway.  It's done at f/10 so Jupiter is smaller than my f/25 pictures but you can see more moons with it.  The seeing wasn't great and since I collect light faster at f/10 I could "freeze" the atmosphere better to get clearer shots.  You can tell that volcanic Io (upper right) is redder than the other two moons.
