Potential future site of Moon Base

I took these pictures on Christmas day (2007) while the moon was tilting its South Pole to us a bit (libration).  Shackleton crater is a top candidate for the moon base and Malapert Mountain (part of Malapert crater) might be used as a communications base.

Looking at South Pole (South is up)

Malapert is in foreground. Shackleton has South pole in it.

Shackleton crater is a top candidate for the moon base since solar panels can get almost continuous sunlight due to the crater's location at the South Pole.  Malapert is a top candidate for a communications station since it always has a direct line of sight with Earth.

NASA has finally released better pictures of the South Pole region than I had posted here previously.  They did a great job and even created a 3-D model (I would like to point out that I started my effort after they finished acquiring pictures and got mine done faster - grin).  You can see them at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/exploration/mmb/moon-20080227.html .  When the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter starts snapping pictures after it is launched in 2008 you'll see a whole lot more detail.  The presentation to the 3rd Annual Exploration Conference provides more explanation and can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/exploration/main/3rd_exploration_conf.html (the Thursday morning briefings)
